The Belfast and Province of Ulster Post-Office Directory and Official Guide For 1870: Benjamin Harvey

The Belfast And Province Of Ulster Post-Office Directory And Official Guide, 1870.

(Compiled and Edited by Benjamin Harvey, of the Belfast Post-Office, Printed at the Belfast News-Letter Steam Book-Printing House, Nos. 55 & 57 Donegall Street, Belfast, 1870.)
Volume I.

In presenting the first Issue of the POST-OFFICE Directory to the Public, the Compiler begs to state that he has used unsparingly the special means afforded him to collect information of the most trustworthy character; and he desire to express his grateful thanks to those whose valuable assistance has enabled him to perfect the Work. Every means has been adopted that was calculated to render it thoroughly comprehensive and reliable in each Department, and neither trouble nor expense spared towards the accomplishment of that object. As, however, much of the information contained in a Work of this kind is necessarily of a character liable to change, the Compiler will be glad if his own efforts towards its constant revision (which shall be unremitting) be supplemented as far as possible by the Public in case of incorrectness, omission, or change. By such aid the usefulness of the Work will be greatly enhanced, and accuracy and completeness insured to its multifarious details – a result t which it is his sole desire to attain, and to which his constant attention shall be directed.

General Post-Office,
March, 1870.

A thriving market town, in the County Armagh, twenty miles S.W. from Belfast and on the line of the Ulster Railway, for which the town is a station. Brownlow House, the seat of Lord Lurgan, proprietor of the town, extends along the North-East of it, and the entrance is by an elegant lodge from near the centre of the main street. The linen and cambric manufacture is the staple trade of Lurgan. There are two breweries; also a hotel. The Belfast, The Northern and Ulster Banks have each a branch in operation here. The General Quarter Sessions of the County are held in Lurgan, and the Petty Sessions every alternate Tuesday. The Parish Church is a handsome structure in pure Gothic Architecture. There are place of worship for Presbyterians, the Society of Friends, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, and Roman Catholics. A Free educational school is supported by Erasmus Smith’s Charity. There is a well-equipped and well-managed Model School. The Mechanics’ Institute is a handsome structure, situated at the the corner of High street and Union street, opposite to the principal entrance to the demesne of Lord Lurgan. The library is open on the evenings of Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, from seven till nine o’clock. President – The Right Hon. Lord Lurgan, K. St. P. Vice-President – Francis Watson, Esq., J.P. Trustees – Lord Lurgan, John Waite Greer, J.P.; John Hancock, J.P.; and Francis Watson, J.P. Hon. Secretary – Fred W. Magahan. There is a building at the back of and adjoining the Institute, known as the New Town Hall, containing lecture-hall, with platform at end with footlights. Town Commissioners’ office, Brown Linen Hall-room, and a room occupied by the Masonic body, for one of the lodges.
