ADDRESS.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is with pleasure that the Proprietor and Publisher (Isaac Slater) presents another Edition of the Directory of Ireland to his numerous Subscribers.
He begs most earnestly to thank them for the liberal support rendered him in connection with this work, and he trusts that he has produced a Directory worthy of the confidence reposed in him and of the country it represents.
With each Edition the labour and expense become greater, and it will be noticed that this volume is considerably larger than former issues.
The Proprietor is desirous of thanking the many gentlemen who have so kindly given him valuable assistance during the compilation of the Directory, more particularly in the Topographical sections.
LURGAN
MAGHERALIN, MOIRA, WARINGSTOWN, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
LURGAN is a thriving and rapidly-extending market town, in the parish of SHANKILL, barony of O’Neilland East, county of Armagh, 85 miles N. from Dublin, 60 S.S.E. from Coleraine, 20 S.W. from Belfast, 19 S. from Antrim, 17 N.E. by E. from Armagh, 14 W.S.W. from Lisburn, 12 S. by W. from Crumlin, 9 N.N.W. from Banbridge, and 5½ N.E. by E. from Portadown; eligibly situated about three miles south of the south-east corner of Lough Neagh, on the line of the Great Northern railway, for which the town is a station. The surrounding country is flat, fertile and luxuriant, populous, and replete with evidence of industry, and consequent comfort and respectability. The principal street, which, indeed, is the principal part of the town, extends for nearly a mile along the Belfast and Armagh road, and is spacious, airy, well built, remarkably clean, and may really be termed handsome. That which may be considered the suburban part of Lurgan is extensive and populous, for numerous lines of houses and detached dwellings stand along nearly all the radiating roads, and form, as it were, villages for a considerable distance. Brownlow House and demesne, the seat of the Right Hon. Lord Lurgan, proprietor of the town, extends along the whole of the north-east of it, and the entrance is by an elegant lodge from near the centre of the street. The mansion has been rebuilt in the Elizabethan style with beautiful freestone brought from Scotland. The grounds, which are generously thrown open to the public, are richly embellished with thriving plantations, reflected in a fine sheet of water, which abounds with various water-fowl, and is encompassed by a well-kept gravel walk. The linen and muslin manufacture is the staple of Lurgan, and in producing variety of fabrics, as cambrics, lawns, diapers, damasks, &c. a large proportion of the town and its vicinity are employed; while some of the establishments of the yarn and linen merchants are extensive. The Belfast Banking Company, the Northern Banking Company, and the Ulster Bank have each a branch in operation here. A facility of intercourse with Belfast is afforded by Lough Neagh and the Lurgan navigation. A newspaper, entitled the Lurgan Times and Portadown Recorder, is published weekly. The general quarter sessions of the county are held in the Court House, William Street, in the months of January, April, July and October, and petty sessions the first and third Tuesday in each month. The constabulary have three stations in the town.
The parish church of Shankill is a handsome structure, with a finely-proportioned octagonal spire, containing a good clock. The interior of the church is neatly fitted up, and furnished with a fine-toned organ. The present Lord Lurgan, in 1853, inserted a beautiful stained glass window in the church in memory of his father, Charles Baron Lurgan; it is a great ornament to the interior, and represents, among other devices, the three figures of Faith, Hope and Charity. The Roman Catholic parochial church is a neat Gothic building. There are places of worship for Presbyterians, the Society of Friends, Methodists, and Plymouth Brethren. The Model school, situate in Brownlow Terrace, is a large and handsome building of brick, with white facings, erected at a cost of £8,000, and opened in 1863. It consists of boys’, girls’ and infants’ departments. The other educational establishments are the National schools, a convent and a free school; and the charities are a dispensary and a union workhouse. The Town Hall, situate at the junction of Union Street with Market Street, is a large and commodious building, opened in November, 1868. It contains a lecture hall, capable of seating 1,000 people, and public offices. The cost was £2,500, a part of which was raised by subscription. The Mechanics’ Institute is a handsome structure, situated at the corner of Market Street and Union Street, and adjoining the Town Hall; it was opened in March, 1859, and cost £1,310; besides this sum, £400 was expended in purchasing the library of the Lurgan Literary Society, now incorporated with the Institute. The building belongs to no one distinct style of architecture, but approaches more nearly to the Romanesque than any other. Its general appearance is light and attractive, and the pleasing effect is much increased by a lofty and beautiful clock tower. The market which is held on Thursday, is abundantly supplied with provisions, and is besides a considerable one for the manufacturers of the town and district, and there is also a great market every second Thursday in the month. Fairs, August 5th and November 22nd. The population of the town in 1861 was 7,772, and in 1871, 10,632.
Conveyance by Railway, on the Great Northern Line.
Station, William st. LURGAN – James Wilkinson, station master & goods agent.
MAGHERALIN, or Maralin, is a parish containing a village of its name, situated partly in the barony of O’Neilland East, county Armagh, but chiefly in the barony of Lower Iveagh, county Down, and on the road from Armagh to Belfast, 2¾ miles E. from Lurgan, and 1½ S. by W. from Moira. A religious establishment is alleged to have been founded here in the seventh century by St. Coleman, or Macholmac, but no traces of it remain. A school conducted by the Church Education Society and a National school are in the parish; and there is also the Protestant Episcopal church and a Roman Catholic chapel. Population of the parish in 1861, 5,490, and in 1871, 4,859, and of the village, 462.
MOIRA, or Saint Inns of Moira, anciently called Moirath, is a post town and a parish, in the barony of Lower Iveagh, county of Down, about 5 miles N.E. from Lurgan, situated on the road from Belfast to Armagh, and within a mile for the Ulster railway. The town, though small, is well built and remarkably clean, and consists of one long and spacious street, containing the court-house, a large and handsome building, in which petty sessions are held. This was formerly part of the parish of Magheralin, and was made a distinct parish about 1725, shortly after which the church was erected at the joint expense of Sir John Rawdon and the Earl of Hillsborough; it is a large and handsome Gothic edifice, with a square tower, surmounted by a spire, and from its situation above the town forms a conspicuous and picturesque object in this rich and well-planted district. There are also chapels for Presbyterians, Methodists, and Unitarians, and a National school. Moira gave the title of earl in the peerage of Ireland to the noble family of Campbell-Rawdon-Hastings, Earl of London, in the peerage of Scotland, and Marquess of Hastings in the peerage of the United Kingdom. Sir John Rawdon was created baron Rawdon in 1750, and advanced to the dignity of Earl Moira in 1761. His son Francis, who succeeded to his titles in 1793, is well known to history both as a soldier and a statesman, in the reigns of George III. and George IV., and was Governor-General of India, in the reign of the latter monarch. Fairs, the first Thursday in February, May, August and November. The parish of Moira contained in 1861, 3,423 inhabitants, and in 1871, 3,044, and the town 640 of that number.
Conveyance by Railway, on the Great Northern Line.
Station, MOIRA (about three quarters of a mile from the town) – William King, station master
WARINGSTOWN, a post town, situated in the parish of DONAGHCLONEY, barony of Iveagh Lower, and county Down, is 65 Irish miles from Dublin, 17 from Belfast, 5 from Banbridge, and 2 from Lurgan, and is the property of Colonel Thomas Waring, D.L., J.P. The branch of the Waring family, which has been established here for more than two hundred years, was driven from England by the religious persecutions which prevailed in the reign of Queen Mary. William Waring, the first settler of the family in this locality, built the mansion house, a handsome old edifice, also the church, which he erected at his own expense and presented to the parish. The linen manufacture was first introduced into that part of the country by his son Samuel Waring, who, on his return from travelling on the Continent, brought with him several artisans from Holland, by whom this branch of industry was established. The church is a neat stone building, surmounted by a spire, and there is a chapel for Presbyterians. The charitable institutions comprise a dispensary, and there are two National schools. The village is neat and clean, indeed all the adjacent country shows a degree of cleanliness and comfort, which contrasts favourably with most other parts of Ireland. Population of the town in 1861, 784, and 1871, 671.
