Lurgan (Lady Day) Riots – Compensation Claims 1879

Lurgan Presentment Sessions.

LURGAN, MONDAY – The presentment sessions for the barony of O Neiland East were held in the Courthouse, Lurgan, to day, before Mr. John Johnston, J.P., and the following associated cess payers : – Messrs. William Baird, Nelson Ruddell, William W. McClure, and David Ruddell. Messrs. John G. Winder, J.P., secretary of the Grand Jury, and Henry Davidson, county surveyor, were in attendance.

 

THE LATE LURGAN RIOTS.

There were forty-eight claims for compensation for malicious injuries arising out of the riots in Lurgan on the nights of the 15th and 16th August.

Messrs. James Ussher, George Hazlett, and W. H. D. Moore, appeared for the claimants. Mr. Edward D. Atkinson for the town commissioners; and Mr. John B. Atkinson for certain ratepayers.

The following are the names of the claimants with the amount allowed in each case, the total amount being £384  11s 1d : –
